Discovering that users routinely use weak and easily discoverable Active Directory passwords is disconcerting. It should be. However, if you know about it, you can do something about it. Honiball IT can perform an audit of the Active Directory passwords by performing a brute force and rule-based dictionary attack against an offline copy of the NTDS.dit file. In a typical Active Directory comprising around 50000 users, we can expose the clear-text of all 8 character passwords in around 20 minutes. Once that is complete, we perform a rule-based dictionary attack using a key space comprising around 45 000 trillion passwords. It is not uncommon for this attack to expose around 60% of Active Directory passwords.
